This month, IVA High is welcoming several community members to our campus while also connecting our learners to our local community through authentic learning experiences. The Founders of Gusto Bakery visited Ethics to support the We Are What We Eat: Care, Culture, and Community Project, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Therapists will be visiting English and PE to support the Development of the Teenage Brain and Community Health Matters Projects.
We prepare students for life beyond high school. We will also be hosting a Career Day for students to explore and learn about career options after high school. If you would like to participate, please reach out to Mrs. Makenna (see below).
We bridge classroom and community. English 9 freshman will be visiting the Long Beach Public Library to get inspiration from the Zine collection in anticipation of designing their own. Biology students will also be visiting Farm Lot 59 in support of their Growing Food on Earth and Mars Project.
We find joy in learning. If you have ideas on how to authentically connect to our learning, please let us know!

Career Cafe
On Friday, March 25th, IVA High will be hosting a Career Cafe for our students! On this day, student will be engaging with presentations given by professionals from a wide range of fields.
However, we need your help! We are still in need of professionals to speak to our students. We are looking for professionals in the following fields: public service (firefighter, officer, etc.), trades (plumber, electrician, etc), medical (doctor, physical therapist, etc.), and sciences (marine biologist, researcher, etc.).
If you or someone you know is interested in presenting to our students, please reach out to Mrs. BriceƱo at makenna.briceno@academylongbeach.org. For more details, see the flyer below!
Campus Highlight
Gusto Bread Visit
In Ethics, students are exploring how food connects us through history, to our culture, and within our community. Ana and Arturo, founders of Gusto Bread in Long Beach, visited yesterday to share their story of how their backyard hobby has become a successful local business. They engaged students in discussions about the importance of highlighting indigenous ingredients and traditions, the relationship between their baking and identity, being true to our values, and building supportive communities.
We are grateful for Gusto Bread's visit, and we look forward to having more of our Long Beach community on campus.
Campus Updates
Metro Passes
We are excited to share that in partnership with GoPass, we provided each of our students with a free Metro Card. Students are able to utilize the Metro Card with Metro bus and rail, City of Commerce, Culver CityBus, Foothill Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and Torrance Transit at no cost. Students registered their Metro Card in advisories, but they need to activate their card by tapping it on any reader. Activation needs to be completed by March 24th.
Family Alliance
We enjoyed seeing some of our IVA High parents at our first Family Alliance Meeting of 2022! During the meeting we shared about our most recent WASC update, field trip updates, senior events, and campus highlights. Our next Family Alliance meeting will be on March 17th from 12:30-1:30pm. We encourage IVA High parents/guardians to attend!
Progress Reports
Progress reports were sent out to parents on Friday, March 4th. If you had any questions or did not receive your copy in the mail, please contact the office 562-283-4456.
